BHS Students recognized at Beverly Public Library's 15th Annual Teen Poetry Contest

Beverly High School student, Anita Richardson, received the First Place (Alec J. Nelson Award)for her poem, “Upon a Strange Encounter” at the 15th Annual Teen Poetry Contest sponsored by the Beverly Public Library. BHS student, Laura Koch, received honorable mention for her poem, Dancing With Death", and BHS student,Alex Groblewski, received third prize for “Roadkill Haiku”. A total of 26 poems were read aloud by poets and judges at the Poetry Contest Reception held on the night of Monday, April 25th. A Conversation on the Joys and Challenges of Raising Grandchildren

If you are a grandparent actively parenting a grandchild (ren) why not join us to discuss the joys and challenges of this special relationship and role? The conversation will be led by Jaclyn Stanko, LICSW and Liz Bristow, MA from the Center for Family Development who hope to generate enough interest to form a group for grandparents who are parenting or who are caregivers of their grandchildren. Refreshments will be served.

Key Club charity drives

March. Boxes are located in front of the main office and next to the

BHS student finalist in film competition

Junior Zach Stone's video was chosen as a finalist of the 2011 Five-Minute
Student Film Contest! "Merry Little Christmas" was showcased as part of
the Top Ten-style presentation of the best student films of the year.

The top three winners of the state-wide competition were announced at an
awards ceremony on Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 pm at CinemaSalem, 1 Church
Street, Salem, Massachusetts. Zach was then announced as the second place
winner of the state wide event.

Also, this winning video aired on Channel 22 in Spring and Summer 2010 as
a segment on Media class show, Zach's Angle, a show that videotaped Zach in
the studio talking about his work and then showing examples of it.

Senior Year concerns

Spring is upon us and with that comes college acceptance letters, future
planning and parties. Senior year for many is year of mixed feelings such
as anxiety, hope, and elation. In addition, many celebrations are for
honoring accomplishments and hard work. Unfortunately every year we hear
about young people getting injured or fatally wounded as a result of
festivities getting out of control.

Beverlega on sale!

The 2011 Beverlega is on sale to all underclassmen. The cost of a yearbook is $50 but can be reserved for the low price of $25. When they arrive in the spring, the cost of the yearbooks will go up to $60. They can be bought online at www.jostensyearsbooks.com or students can buy them in Room 305. Boston Globe Scholastic Art Competition

The BHS art department would like to congratulate the following students
for winning awards at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Competition. There were 12,000 individual works and 5000 portfolios submitted. Gold and Silver key works will be hanging from Feb 14 - April 7 at the State Transportation Building in Boston. Gold Key art portfolios will be projected and one work from Gold Key Photo portfolios will be on display from Feb. 28 - March 6. Gold Key portfolios are sent to New York for national judging. There is an awards ceremony for all winning students on March 6.

Mandatory Health Screenings

The health office is conducting the state's yearly mandatory vision, hearing and postural screenings on all of the freshman class. After the freshman class screening is completed, the health office will then proceed with the state mandated height, weight and body mass index screenings for all sophmores. All parents who do not want their child screened can send their child in with a note from home informing the health office.

On Thursday, February 3, there will be an important informational meeting for all Beverly High School parents and guardians regarding Beverly High School's 1 to 1 laptop program which will begin in September, 2011. This 1 to 1 laptop meeting will begin at 6:00 pm in the BHS auditorium before the second semester Open House program which will proceed immediately after the meeting.

Upon the conclusion of our informational meeting, all parents/guardians will receive their son or daughter's abbreviated second semester schedule and have the opportunity to meet their teachers.

The Annual Junior Parent College Information Session will be held on Thursday February 3 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Beverly High School Auditorium. This event will take place right before Beverly High School's "Second Semester Open House"planned from 6 to 8 pm. that evening. At the Information Session, the Guidance Department will provide parents with some insight into the
college admissions process. Some of the topics to be covered will include establishing timelines, how to choose a college, the SAT's and ACT's, the application process and how to use Naviance amd much more. This session should help to ease any trepidation about the college admissions experience!

8th Grade Open House

Nike Re-use A Shoe Program

Do you have old athletic shoes hanging around and don’t know what to do with them?

Consider donating them to the Nike Re-Use a Shoe Program.

BHS – along with all Beverly Public Schools, will be collecting old athletic shoes from November 1 to November 12. These shoes will be recycled by Nike to create tracks, playgrounds, tennis courts and synthetic turf fields and more.

Collection bins will be located in the BHS lobby. Please no cleats, no metal cleats or mud. Thanks for your support.

THE FAMILY CENTER

The Family Center located at the Northshore Education Consortium in Beverly provides families with education, resources, and support focused on special needs and at-risk youth. The Family Center offers a welcoming environment with a lending library of books, high quality literature, community resource information and computer access for families. The Family Center provides further support to families through support groups, trainings and workshops.

All services are free and open to the public.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Lending Library– A comprehensive collection of adult and children’s books. Topics include special needs, developmental, behavioral, mental health and medical conditions in youth, substance abuse, and parenting.

Family Support - Staff is available to provide support to families and to assist in accessing materials, literature, online resources, and community opportunities.

Parent Education Groups – Small interactive groups of parents who come together to learn about a specific topic. Groups are taught by specialized professionals with expertise in the area. Space is limited to enable discussion and support.

Workshops – Morning and evening educational workshops are presented by experts in their field. Parents and professionals are welcome. Workshops are free and open to the public.

Community Resources – Information on local programs, support groups, educational offerings and recreational activities. Community bulletin board provides up-to-date information on community events

Computer-Internet Access – Computers with bookmarked websites are available for research.

Trip to Washington, D.C.

The Social Studies Department is sponsoring a trip to Washington, D.C. next
April. If approved by the School Committee, the trip will take place on
April 10-15 and be organized through Project Close Up, a non-profit group
that has been providing students with an in-depth look at our nation's
capitol for almost 40 years. For students who are interested, an

at 2:45 in Mr. Leahy's room (B207). At that meeting, students will be
provided with detailed information about the trip to take home to parents. A
meeting for parents of students who decide to go on the trip will take place

Distractology 101

Coming to Beverly October 12 – 16:   The Arbella Insurance Group Charitable
Foundation has created a mobile training tour called Distractology 101 which is a
simulator experience created to show inexperienced drivers exactly how dangerous
distracted driving really is. The program is designed for students who have their
driver’s permit or who have had their license for up to 3 years.  It’s 45 minutes
long and FREE!  

The North Shore YMCA and the Leslie S. Ray Insurance Agency have partnered to host
Distractology 101 and are extending an invitation to BHS students to participate. This training will take place at the Sterling Center YMCA.  The hours are 2 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday through Friday and 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday.   

 Students who participate will receive a $15 gas card. This is a potentially life-saving experience. Space is limited and filling up quickly, please call Kate

PSAT

The practice SAT, known as the PSAT will be given at Beverly High School on Saturday, October 16^th from 7:30am to 12:30pm. The PSAT is recommended for juniors planning to attend a four year college and sophomores in honors level courses. It is the only time of year that the PSAT is offered.

The PSAT is truly a practice SAT, it will never be a part of a student's record to colleges, but may qualify students for scholarships. Taking the PSAT will make a student more prepared for the real SAT, administered in the spring of junior year. According to the College Board, students who take the PSAT score 120 points higher on the SAT than those who don’t. For more detailed information, visit www.collegeboard.com/psat

Registration will take place beginning Monday, October 4^th. Students must register after school only, not during the school day, in the B wing office. Registration will run from October 4th through October 15^th.

Cost of the PSAT will be $25 until October 13^th and $30 on October 14^th and 15^th. Register early to avoid the $5 late fee. Cash or check payable to “BHS PSAT”. Fee waivers are available for juniors; please see your counselor. Results will be available in December during a counselor presentation.

German students visiting BHS

Students from BHS partner school in Germany, the Kopernikus Gymnasium Bargteheide,
are arriving on September 29 for a three week stay in Beverly. The students will be staying
 with Beverly High School students and their families. They will visit BHS classrooms and 
take field trips into Boston, accompanied by their chaperones, music teacher, Henrike Korb and history/political science teacher, Caroline Ritter.

“Beverly DECA Cares” was started in June of 2010 by DECA members, Matthew

Eriksen and Ashley Chalifour with our public relations assistants, Alexandra

Kelly, Katerina Hillios, and George Kastrinakis. The mission of our

organization is to raise awareness and funds for the not-for-profit Autism

Speaks ™ association.

What is Autism Speaks™? Autism Speaks™ is dedicated to funding global

biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for

autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on

individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal

with the hardships of this disorder. We are committed to raising the funds

necessary to support these goals.

What is DECA? The mission of DECA, Inc. is to enhance the co–curricular

education of students with interest in marketing, management and

entrepreneurship. DECA helps students to develop skills and competence for

marketing careers, to build self–esteem, to experience leadership and to

practice community service. DECA is committed to the advocacy of marketing

education and the growth of business/education partnerships.

Beverly High makes Boston Magazine's honor roll

In a recent excerpt from Boston Magazine, Beverly High School was recognized as making the magazine's "honor roll" for our use of technology and particularly the one on one laptop intiative. Though we will begin the program next September (2011), Beverly High School is setting the bar high. Beverly High School
Picture this: every student working wirelessly on a Mac laptop in a new building. Teachers using Wikis to post assignments, give feedback, and encourage discussion online. Assessments that aren’t just term papers, but 21st-century ways to demonstrate knowledge — blogs, documentaries, PowerPoint presentations, and podcasts. It’s about to happen at Beverly High, which this September becomes the first school in eastern Massachusetts to require every incoming freshman to have a laptop. (Thanks to a deal with Apple, students can purchase, rent, or borrow a computer.) The school teaches everything from basic computing literacy to AutoCAD, the design-industry standard. And it also trains students to provide tech support to peers. Kyle Sweeney, Beverly class of ’07, says that experience helped him get into college. “It taught me communication and problem-solving skills better than any class.”

Up All Night- thank you

To the Community of Beverly:

On Sunday, June 13, the Beverly High School Class of 2010 graduation was held, marking the 19th anniversary of the Beverly High School Up All Night Party. The mission has not changed over the years - providing a fun and safe celebration for the graduates, and to let them know that their hometown applauds their achievements.

The Up All Night Party was held once again at Cedardale Health and Fitness Club in Haverhill. This venue had much to offer, providing an exciting and entertaining night for the graduates. There was a pool, tennis, basketball, racquetball, inflatables, casino tables and more. A hilarious performance by a hypnotist was the perfect end to the evening.

Open House-Sept.13th

Beverly High School will hold an Open House on Monday, September 13th from 6:30 to 8:30 at Beverly High School. Parents and guardians are invited to follow their son/daughter's schedule and meet their teachers. Principal Gallagher and BHS administration will also be available. This evening is not an opportunity to hold a conference about an individual student. Staff members will be glad to arrange a separate appointment for concerns about an individual student.

Science department faculty member, George Collison, was invited by the United States Agency for International Education to assist the science segment of the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia in Addis Abbaba with writing a teacher's handbook for physics education grades 5 through 8. Dr. Collison will collaborate with members of the physics department at the University of Abbada as well as physics educators at the Department of Education.

Parking and traffic information

Parking spots will be sold to seniors first. Purchase dates will be scheduled for August 24, 25, 26 in C Wing Office from 9am-12pm. Seniors have priority for parking spaces. After the first week of school, available parking spaces will be open for juniors.

To purchase a parking spot, students should bring a copy of driver’s license, vehicle registration and a check made out to Beverly Public Schools for $175.

The front parking area and rotary of the high school are closed off due to construction. A student pick up and drop off area will be designated on Panther Way on the side where the solar panels are located.

School Opening

The first day of school for Beverly High School freshmen will be held on Tuesday, August 31. The Freshmen Orientation Day will begin at 8:15. Upperclassmen will greet and direct freshmen as they enter the building. Students will be dismissed at 2:33.

All students, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors will report to school on Wednesday, September 1st at 8:15.

Why are schools doing BMI screening?
In an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) wants to help all people in Massachusetts maintain a healthy weight. As a state, when compared to the nation, Massachusetts ranked 4th best in adults with healthy weight but only 26th best for children with healthy weight. People who are overweight or obese can have serious health problems as well as people who are underweight. Parents who have information about their children’s BMI and ideas about how to help their children with healthy living can make sure their kids maintain a healthy weight. Community leaders who have information about how many children in their community are in each weight range can work with parents, school officials, after school programs and many others, to come up with ideas to help even more children get into a healthier weight range.

Public schools have been measuring the height and weight of students for many years as part of yearly growth screening. Recently, the DPH passed a law that requires schools to use this information to calculate BMI for students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10. It also requires schools to share the BMI results with the child’s parents and guardians in a way that keeps the results private.

Why is BMI screening important to children and families?
BMI is a way to detect possible weight problems for children. A BMI below the 5th percentile may mean a child is not growing well or that he or she may be at risk for an eating disorder. Children with a BMI above the 85th percentile are overweight. Those above the 95th percentile are obese. Overweight or obese kids are more likely to be overweight adults. This puts them at risk for a number of health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

What can I do to help my child be healthier?
You can talk with your child’s doctor about his or her BMI. You can also help your child eat 3 balanced meals a day. These meals should include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish, and low-fat or non-fat milk. You should limit foods high in sugar and fat. For example, avoid soda and other foods that have lots of calories but no nutritional value.

In addition, you should encourage your children to be active for at least an hour each day and limit how much time they spend watching TV or playing on the computer. The local Sterling Center YMCA has developed special fitness programs just for children and their families who have had recent BMI screens through the schools. Some of these programs are free for the first 40 participants until the end of the school year! Please call Andrew Walker at Sterling Center YMCA at 978-564-3486 for specific information. How should I talk with my child about his or her results?
You can start by saying that the BMI screening gives you and your child information about how he or she is growing. Rather that talking about BMI, you can talk about ways to stay healthy and active.

If you and your child have talked about these topics before, either at home or in the doctor’s office, you can remind your child how this fits in with what you have already discussed. You can also ask your child if he or she has any questions about the program. Encouraging your child to share feelings about his or her growing and changing body will let him or her know it is okay to talk about these things with you.

How will the school protect my child’s results so they are not teased or embarrassed by other students?
Schools have been measuring heights and weights for many years and are very good at keeping the results private. Results will be mailed directly to parents or guardians. The new law requires schools to make sure the results are not shared with anyone else.

BEVERLY RECYCLES COMPUTER PRINTER CARTRIDGES

The computer maintenance interns at Beverly High School recycle laser and
inkjet printer cartridges raising money to support the computer repair
program. We accept cartridges from all manufacturers - new, used and
previously recycled. Please leave your cartridges in the drop off box
